Big Red double up Kalamazoo

The 25th-ranked Denison men's tennis team knocked off Kalamazoo College 6-3 in the second round of the Great Lakes Colleges Association (GLCA) Championship Tourmaent on Friday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich.

A clean sweep in doubles competition helped propel the Big Red to a victory over their regional opponent.  The junior tandem of Tyler Cempre and Matt McErlean and the rookie duo of Jay Fovel and Juan Guerra each notched 9-7 victories at first and third doubles, respectively.  Jared Connolly and Tim Martin teamed up for an 8-6 win over Clay Bartelt and Steve Hanselman at the second flight.

Denison took three of six singles matches from the Hornets to lock up the win.  Senior Evan Verbofsky picked up his 10th win of the season over Tom Cafmeyer at third singles (6-2, 6-3), while Cempre logged a straight-set win (6-3, 6-1) over Mike Korn at No. 6 singles.  At fourth singles, Tom Cawood won a three-set thriller over Alex Dombos.  The junior earned a 7-5 win in the opening set, but dropped a 6-1 decision in the second game.  In the third and final set, Cawood gutted out a 6-4 decision for his sixth-consecutive win.

The Big Red improve to 7-4 on the season, while Kalamazoo falls to 6-7.  DU returns to action on Saturday when they take on No. 19 DePauw at 10:30 a.m.
