DU drops a pair to No. 6 Heidelberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Big Red hit the road for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday and were turned away by the nation's sixth-ranked team, Heidelberg University, 10-3 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

In the opener, DU and Heidelberg resumed a game that was interrupted in the middle of the first inning on March 30 in Granville due to snow.  The Berg led 1-0 through the middle of the first and after Denison took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, Heidelberg came back with a four-run fourth inning and a four-run seventh en route to the 10-3 win.

Denison finished with 10 hits in the opener and was led at the plate by Matt Forgatch who was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and one run scored.  Second baseman Evan Nicholson also added two hits and one run scored in game one.  The loss was charged to Dale McOsker who allowed five earned runs off eight hits in 3.1 innings pitched.  Evan Knoblauch worked the final 2.2 innings, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out four.

Heidelberg's Derek Andrzejczak was 2-for-3 with two walks, a home run, and four RBIs.  The win went to Zach O'Driscoll who pitched six innings, without allowing an earned run.  He also struck out seven.

The second game, which was also a 9-inning affair, saw Denison take another early 2-1 lead only to have it erased by a four-run fifth inning by the Berg.  DU's pair of runs in the second inning came off an RBI single by Josh Butler and a sacrifice fly by Tim Duxbury.  In the pivotal fifth inning, Heidelberg led off the inning with back-to-back doubles and followed that up with two RBI singles as well as two walks to take back the lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Big Red brought the potential tying run to the plate with two outs but were turned away by Heidelberg closer Andy Lowe who picked up his sixth save of the season.

Forgatch led Denison once again, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk.  The loss was charged to Philip Seay who surrendered three earned runs in two innings of relief.  Heidelberg's Elvin Williams picked up the win after not allowing an earned run in five innings of work.

Denison falls to 13-14 overall while the Berg improves to 18-4.  DU will return to action on Saturday (April 9) when they host Wittenberg in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
