Box Score 2 For the second time in as many days, the Denison University softball team rallied late to secure a game two victory. The Big Red scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to knock off Ohio Northern University 14-11 in the nightcap of a doubleheader after dropping the opener 11-3.
The Polar Bears took their first lead of the game at 11-8 following a four-run top of the sixth. Rookie Rachel Laughlin opened the bottom of the frame with a base hit back to the pitcher. In the next at bat, Erica Evans reached on a fielder's choice that ended up in right center. The throwing error by the third baseman allowed Evans to make it to third and Laughlin to score from first. Evans scored after junior Hannah Price reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. A single to left by Meghan Edwards put runners at first and second, while a ground out by Jessica Robertson moved both runners in scoring position. Pinch hitter Kelly Cunningham drove in Price to tie the game on a fielder's choice to second. With runners at the corners, Karla Dixon plated the go-ahead run in the form of Edwards on an RBI double to the gap in right center. With two outs, sophomore Kait Fiore tacked on a pair of insurance runs on a double to short left center. Fiore's extra-base hit scored Dixon and Heather Larsen.
Reliever Kelsey Hager struck out Michelle Sweet to open the seventh, and induced a ground out to first for the second out of the frame. Hager retired the side in order after Evans made a diving snag behind third base.
After struggling to generate offense in the opener, the Big Red pounded out 13 hits and scored 14 runs. More then half of DU's hits came in the seven-run second frame. Denison saw five-consecutive batters reach safely with one-out in the inning. Lauren Lynn hit a two-run single up the middle with two outs, while Evans, Price, Edwards, Larsen and Fiore all pushed a run across.
Hager picked up her team-leading seventh win of the season after striking out one in 1.1 hitless innings of work. Laughlin got the start and allowed 11 runs (8 earned) on 11 hits in 5.2 innings. Fiore paced the DU attack with three hits, a double, three RBIs and a run scored, while Price, Edwards and Robertson all logged two hits. Price scored three times and knocked in a pair, while Edwards, Evans and Larsen each scored two runs.
In the opener, the Polar Bears scored 11 unanswered runs, sparked by a seven-run second, en route to locking up the victory. Rebecca Dyer suffered the loss after giving up nine runs on seven hits in two innings. Edwards had a double and knocked in two of the three runs, while Price scored a run and drove in another.
Denison (15-5) opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday (April 9) when they travel to Oberlin College. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
