Box Score 2 After dropping game one, 2-0, the Big Red rebounded with a 9-8 extra innings victory over Defiance College in game two, completing a doubleheader split on a blustery afternoon in Granville.
Trailing 8-6 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Denison's Erica Evans started things off with a single to left field. Hannah Price would follow by sending the first pitch she saw through the left side to get two runners on with no outs. That would force a Defiance pitching change and Yellow Jacket head coach Jodi Holava would turn to Lisa Brophy who would be making just her third appearance of the year.
Meghan Edwards would continue the hit parade with a single up the middle that would score Evans and move Price to third base. Edwards' heads-up base running also allowed her to move into scoring position on the play. Jessica Robertson would follow with a single that would tie the contest at 8-8, however Brophy would find a way to work out of a bases loaded jam to send the game into extra innings.
DU starting pitcher Rachel Laughlin returned to the circle for the eighth and retired the Yellow Jackets in order. In the home half of the eighth Kait Fiore was placed on second base to start the inning and Laughlin would reach base after Defiance first baseman Aubrie Ridinger dropped a fielded bunt by Laughlin, resulting in runners on the corners with no outs. After an Evans pop-up, Price would come through with the game-winning RBI on a shot back to the box that glanced off Brophy's glove, allowing Fiore to score easily.
After zooming through game one with only eight combined hits and two runs, Denison and Defiance combined for 29 hits and 17 runs in game two. Evans led all DU hitters by going 6-for-8 with two runs scored over the course of both games. After falling behind 4-0 in the night cap, Laughlin blasted a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the first inning to get her team back in the game. Defiance would maintain a lead until the bottom of the fifth when DU pieced together three runs off three hits.
Following Evans at the plate was Price and Laughlin who each had three hits and two RBIs in game two.
Laughlin picked up the win by pitching all eight innings. She allowed eight runs, with seven of them earned while striking out six and walking two. The loss was charged to Brophy who gave up three hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
In game one the story was Defiance pitcher Shauna Bowers who never allowed the Big Red offense to heat up. She gave up only four hits while striking out nine. Denison starter Rebecca Dyer also pitched well. While going the distance she gave up just four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out five and walking two.
Denison moves to 14-4 after the split while Defiance's record shifts to 10-14. The Big Red will return to action tomorrow when they host Ohio Northern at 3:30 p.m.
