The 27th-ranked Denison men's tennis team captured their third-consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference West Division crown following a 9-0 victory over Wabash College on Saturday.
The Big Red took an early 3-0 lead with a clean sweep in doubles competition. The first doubles team of Matt McErlean and Tyler Cempre won a 7-4 tiebreaker over Daniel Delgado and Wade Miller of Wabash. The duo of Tim Martin and Jared Connolly picked up a shutout win at No. 2 doubles, while Tom Cawood and Evan Verbofsky also logged an 8-5 decision at the third flight.
In singles action, McErlean, Verbofsky, Cawood and Cempre recorded straight-set wins. After dropping the opening set at second singles, rookie Juan Guerra took the second set 6-1 and won the super tiebreaker 10-7 to complete the come-from-behind win. Fellow first-year Andrew Marczak followed the same model at the fifth flight. After losing the opener 6-4, the freshman rattled off 6-1 and 10-4 wins in the next two sets.
DU improved to 10-7 overall and 3-0 in the NCAC West, while the Little Giants fall to 16-9 and 2-1 in the division. Denison closes out the regular season on Tuesdays (April 26) against Ohio Northern at 4:30 p.m.
