The sixth-ranked Denison women's tennis team logged their fifth North Coast Athletic Conference win of the season after picking up an 8-1 win over Allegheny at the Mitchell Center on Saturday.
The second doubles team of rookie Kelsey Geppner and sophomore Alex Marcell opened the match with a dominating 8-1 win, while the duo of Kristin Cobb and Sarah Short doubled up Sara Longo and Lauren Kristofco at the first flight, 8-4. The Gators avoided the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Geppner turned in a 6-0, 6-1 win at the third flight to give the Big Red a 3-1 advantage. Cobb and Short also picked up straight-set wins at first (6-0, 6-1) and second (6-3, 6-1) singles, respectively, to secure the match victory. Junior Kate Westenberger knocked off Elyse Schmitt 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, while Jane Lent was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the sixth flight. Denison came away with the 8-1 victory after rookie Lilianna Broussalian closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at fifth singles.
The Big Red improve to 13-4 overall and 5-0 in the NCAC, while the Gators fall to 9-6 on the year and 0-2 in the league. DU closes out the 2011 regular season on Monday (April 18) when they host The College of Wooster at 4:30 p.m.
