The seventh-ranked Lords of Kenyon College picked up a 7-2 victory over No. 25 Denison University on Wednesday in Gambier, Ohio.
Both Big Red wins took place in singles competition. Junior Tom Cawood improved to 9-0 at No. 4 singles following a three-set win over regionally-ranked CJ Williams. After dropping a 6-4 decision in the opener, Cawood roared back with a 6-3 victory in the second game and a 6-2 win in the third-and-final set. At the fifth flight, rookie Andrew Marczak defeated Jake Matthews in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).
First-year Juan Guerra won the first set 7-6 at No. 2 singles, before dropping the next two (7-6 [10-5], 10-5) to eighth-ranked Paul Burgin. At the sixth flight, Tyler Cempre and Austin Griffin split the opening two sets 6-4 and 7-5, respectively. In the super-breaker set, Griffin edged out a 12-10 decision over Cempre.
Denison falls to 7-7 on the year, while the Lords improve to 12-3. DU returns to action on Thursday (April 14) when they travel to Oberlin College. Match time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
