Box Score The Big Red scored 12 of their 17 goals in the first half en route to a 17-2 victory over the visiting Fontbonne University Griffins from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium. The work that was needed to clear the field of more than an inch of snow prior to the game paid off as Denison improved to 2-0 on the season.
Denison controlled the contest from start to finish and the stat sheet tells the tale as the Big Red outshot their opponents 39-5 while forcing the Griffins into 29 turnovers. DU did their best work pressuring Fontbonne in transition and while DU posted a .900 clear percentage, their opponents were just 6-for-16 (.375) when clearing the ball.
Denison was led offensively by Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) who scored two goals while adding a game-high four assists. Eight different Denison players scored at least one goal and Lulu Carter (Greenwich, Conn./The Millbrook School), Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) and Katherine Palms (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Grosse Pointe South) all posted hat tricks for the Big Red. Also chipping in with multi-goal efforts was Lanning McDonald (Darien, Conn./Darien) and Olivia Shiland (South Hamilton, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham).
Defensively, Denison was led by Shiland who had three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Palms added three ground balls and two caused turnovers to pace DU. As a team, Denison scooped up 25 ground balls and while posting 19 caused turnovers.
Both Fontbonne goals came from Mary Alice Price. The Griffins drop to 2-2 with the loss and Denison remains unbeaten as they head to spring break where they will place Adrian on March 14 before traveling to California for back-to-back games against Whitier and Redlands on March 17-18.
