The Denison University Big Red improved to 2-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play following a 9-0 victory over the Tigers of Wittenberg University on Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Ohio.
Denison held a commanding 3-0 lead after the completion of doubles play. Juniors Matt McErlean and Tyler Cempre posted an 8-4 victory over Rob Lehner and Joseph Marra at the first doubles flight, while the teams of Tim Martin and Evan Verbofsky, and rookies Jay Fovel and Juan Guerra each recorded 8-5 wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, respectively.
In singles action, McErlean posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Bobby Fisher at the first flight, while Guerra, Andrew Marczak and Martin all notched 6-1, 6-3 wins at second, fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Verbofsky logged a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3, while Cempre won 6-0, 6-3 in the fifth slot.
The Big Red improve to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC West Division, while the Tigers fall to 9-4 on the year and 0-1 in league play. Denison returns to action on Saturday (April 2) when they take on Case Western Reserve at Wooster. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
