Box Score 2 The Denison University baseball team plated 10 runs in the fourth inning of game two as they salvaged a doubleheader split with Allegheny College on Sunday with a 16-8 victory in the nightcap. The Big Red suffered a 12-6 loss in the opener.
Denison held a 3-1 edge heading into their game-breaking half of the fourth inning. In that frame, the home team saw 13-straight batters reach base safely. Those 13 hitters reached on five hits, four walks, two fielder's choice outs and a pair of hit batters as the Gators sent three different hurlers to the mound in the fourth. The 10-run explosion gave DU a 13-1 lead heading into the fifth. Allegheny outscored the Big Red 7-3 over the final two and a half frames, but the fourth-inning meltdown was too much to over come.
Junior second baseman Evan Nicholson went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base to pace the Denison offense. Junior Andrew Mahle logged three singles and drove in a pair, while Tyler Nicholson plated a pair and scored three times. Catcher Justin Vaske also had two hits, two RBIs and two runs.
Senior starter Freddy Marino improved to 2-0 on the year after giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work. The senior southpaw also struck out three and walked three.
In the opener, the Gators plated four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and added three more in the sixth en route to a 12-6 victory. Senior Matt Forgatch and Peter Krieger each went 3-for-4 in game one. Forgatch had two RBIs and a run, while Krieger hit two doubles and drove in a run. Senior pitcher Nick Smith took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
Denison (11-9, 3-1 NCAC) returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lancaster, Ohio for a nine-inning game against Capital University. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
