Box Score The University of Redlands plated seven runs in the opening frame en route to handing the Denison baseball team an 11-1 loss in the final game of their West Coast trip on Sunday morning in Redlands, Calif.
The Bulldogs pounded out seven hits in the first inning, including three extra base hits. The offensive explosion was fueled by a two-run home run by Nate Carlson, and a two-RBI single by Brandon Owashi. Redlands added insurance tallies in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
Sophomore Kyle Clemmenson drove in Denison's only run of the game in the fourth frame. Junior Tyler Nicholson led of the inning with an infield single and advanced to third on a Matt Forgatch base hit to left center. The junior crossed the plate on a Clemmenson force out.
Nicholson and senior Peter Krieger both went 2-for-3 on the day. Krieger's double represented DU's only extra base hit, while Nicholson was responsible for the lone Big Red run. Bob Giarratani suffered the loss after surrendering seven runs on seven hits. Reliever Connor Murphy allowed four runs on seven hits and notched three strikeouts in five innings of work.
Denison returns to Ohio with a 6-8 record. The Big Red return to action on Tuesday (March 22) when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to take on Muskingum University. First pitch from Mose Morehead Field is scheduled for 4 p.m.
