Denison routs Carleton, 17-7

Box Score

Senior Peter Krieger blasted two more home runs in Denison's 17-7 victory over Carleton College on Wednesday afternoon from The Yard in Redlands, Calif.  With the win, the Big Red improve to 2-1 on their spring trip in California.

Denison wasted no time gaining the early advantage as sophomore Danny Kraus opened the game with a double to the gap in left center and advanced to third on a base hit by senior Matt Forgatch.  The second-year player crossed the dish on a delayed steal that gave the Big Red a 1-0 after one.  Three DU hits, a wild pitch and a costly Carleton error allowed Denison to tack on three more runs in the second.

The Knights trimmed the deficit to 4-1 when Jeff Dsida scored on a fielder's choice by Kiyota Gomi.  The Big Red answered in the third when Krieger blasted a two-run home run with one out.  In the bottom of the third, four Carleton hits and a pair of DU fielding miscues allowed the Knights to take a 7-6 advantage through three frames.

However, the Carleton lead was short lived as the Big Red erupted for six runs in the fourth to regain the lead.  Kraus reached on a fielding error to open the inning, and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.  Forgatch drew a walk and Justin Vaske was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.  Tim Duxbury drove in the first run of the frame after reaching safely on an error by Clay Parrish.  With the bases still loaded, junior David Holmes dropped a single into left that plated Forgatch.  Pinch hitter Kyle Clemmenson pushed across another run on an RBI ground out to the pitcher.  With two on and one down, Krieger continued his dominance at The Yard as he crushed his fourth homer of the year to put Denison up 12-7.  All four of his home runs this season have come in Redlands, Calif.

The Big Red increased their lead to 17-7 after tacking on two insurance runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth inning.

Krieger finished the day 2-for-3 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored, while Forgatch went a perfect 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs.  Kraus logged two hits, scored three times and stole two bases.  Senior Freddy Marino picked up the win in his second appearance this year.  Marino went 2.2 innings allowed just one hit and struck out one.  Relievers Philip Seay, Hunter Sorensen and Sam Belisle combined for four innings of scoreless ball.  The trio scattered a combined four hits while striking out five.  Starter Bob Giarratani surrendered seven runs (four earned) on six hits with three Ks in 2.1 innings.

Patrick Philley went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored to pace the Knight offense.  Ray Yong added two doubles and two RBIs, while Gomi drove in a pair.  Starter Henry Rownd suffered the loss after surrendering 12 runs (eight earned) on eight hits in four innings.

Denison (3-5) will take on Carleton (0-4) in a doubleheader on Thursday (March 17) at the Rancho Cucamonga Epicenter, home of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.  First pitch for the twinbill is slated for 10 a.m. PDT.
