Seven-run fifth sinks Big Red

Box Score

York College pounded out seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a 13-4 victory over the Denison University baseball team in their season opener on Friday in Atlanta, Ga.

Trailing 4-0 after three innings, the Big Red chipped away at the deficit in the top of the fourth.  Junior Andrew Mahle (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) got things started with a one-out double to right field.  After Mahle advanced to third on a wild pitch, sophomore Tim Duxbury (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) drove in the junior after reaching on a fielding error.  Senior Peter Krieger (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) added DU's second run with an RBI double to left field that scored Duxbury.  The senior came around to score a two-out run off a single up the middle by junior Tyler Nicholson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover).  The three-run rally trimmed the deficit to 4-3 after four innings of play.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans erupted for seven runs off five hits and two Big Red miscues.  York added two more tallies in the sixth to take a 13-3 advantage.  The final Denison run came in the top of the eighth when sophomore Josh Butler (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Iroquois Ride) drew a bases loaded walk with on outs.

Juniors Evan Nicholson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover), Justin Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) and Mahle paced the Big Red offense with two hits each.  Mahle and Krieger recorded the only extra-base hits for DU.  Junior hurler Tyler Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) suffered the loss after allowing 11 runs (5 earned) on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.  Senior Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) gave up two runs on three hits over the final 3.1 innings.

York's Kyle Cook went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.  Starter Andy Rosenzweig (1-0) allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits with four Ks in six innings of work.

Denison (0-1) returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 19) when they take on host Emory University at 10:30 a.m.
