Big Red falter in second half against Bishops

Box Score

The Big Red held a 12-point lead at halftime but Ohio Wesleyan would get 23 points from Greg White and 13 second half points from Tim Brady to lead a 75-67 comeback victory for the Battling Bishops over Denison from Livingston Gymnasium.

It was a tale of two distinctly different halves for the Big Red as they came out smoking, shooting 52 percent in the first half while connecting on 6 out of 10 from 3-point range.  Junior guard Brett Tiberi (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) set the tone in the first half by going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc and leading all scorers with 12 points at the break.

Trailing 40-28 as the second half opened, the Battling Bishops looked to leading scorer Tim Brady to lead them out of their first half funk.  The junior, who entered the game averaging a team-high 17.6 points, scored 11 of his team's first 15 points in the second half and in the blink of an eye, he had his team to within four points of the lead with 11 minutes to play.

After a pair of missed free throws for the Big Red, Greg White would connect on a 3-pointer to cut the Denison lead to 47-46 with 10:36 to play.  That play would spark an 18-7 run for OWU that would give the Bishops a 64-54 lead with 4:44 to play.

The Big Red would give one last effort at a comeback when junior guard Jim Leffew (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) hit a timely 3-pointer with 2:15 to play making it a two-possession game at 66-60.  The Bishops would turn the ball over on their next possession and again it would be Leffew who knocked down the quick jumper, shrinking the lead to 66-62 with just over one minute to play.  The pivotal exchange would follow on OWU's next possession when Marshall Morris connected in the paint.

Denison got out on offense quickly after the Ohio Wesleyan make and Jon Akpapunam (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's) got an open 3-point look but just came up short.  The rebound was hauled in by Dre White with 50 seconds left and Denison would be forced to foul.  Over the final minute of play OWU hit 7-of-10 free throws to seal the victory.

The Big Red, who were playing without the team's second-leading scorer and rebounder, Mike Garabedian (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy), got 18 points and 10 rebounds from Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland).  Leffew finished with 15 points and five assists while Tiberi ended up with 13 points despite not attempting a field goal in the second half.

Greg White's 23 points came off a 6-for-15 shooting performance.  He was 8-for-9 from the free throw line in 31 minutes of action.  Dre White added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds while Brady scored all 13 of his points in just 14 minutes of play in the second half.

OWU outrebounded Denison 43-29 and they controlled the offensive glass, 15-7.  Those second chance opportunities paid off as Ohio Wesleyan held a 16-0 advantage over the Big Red in that pivotal category.

The win improves Ohio Wesleyan's record to 15-9 overall and 11-4 in the NCAC.  This is their 11th win out of their last 12 contests.  Denison drops to 8-17 overall and 5-11 in the NCAC.  The Big Red will learn their opponent for the 2011 NCAC Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday evening.
