The Denison men's swimmers and divers picked up four more victories on Saturday night en route to the program's third consecutive, and fourth overall North Coast Athletic Conference championship from C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio. The Big Red amassed 1,774.5 points over the three-day event, defeating second-place Kenyon College by 202 points. Over the course of the meet DU totaled 12 event championships, one NCAC record and three new school records.
Denison sophomore Quinn Bartlett turned in one of the most impressive performances of the meet by shattering the DU record and the conference record in the 200 backstroke. While going head-to-head against fellow teammate and defending champion, Robert Barry, Bartlett glided to a time of 1:47.85, besting Barry's conference record by just under one second. In addition, Bartlett's time unseated 2007 graduate Adam Ulrich from the record books. Ulrich posted a time of 1:48.00 and won a national championship with that swim in 2007.
Following Bartlett in the 200 back was Barry who also notched an 'A' cut time of 1:49.55. Michael DeSantis placed third in 1:51.27 and Sean Chabot came in fourth in 1:51.49.
In the opening event of the night, first-year Al Weik completed his sweep of the distance freestyle events with his victory in the 1650 freestyle. Weik covered the mile-long swim in 15:32.02, besting teammate and second-place finisher, Dan Thurston, by 31 seconds. That marked the first win in the 1650 by a Denison male since Bryce Peterson in 2006. In second, Thurston touched in 16:01.08 for a 'B' cut and Jay Haney (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) placed third with a 'B' cut time of 16:03.42. Fifth-place went to Merritt Boardman in 16:19.83. DU gained 62 points on Kenyon in the event.
Sophomore diver Gabe Dixson won the one-meter dive and was named the NCAC's Diver of the Year. In tonight's one-meter Dixson posted a new school-record score of 543.20. He was trailed closely in second-place by teammate Cody Smith who totaled 515.20 points. In fourth place was Phil Meyer with 451.65 points. Second-year diving coach Jason Glorius was named the men's Coach of the Year.
In the 200 breaststroke, last year's NCAC Swimmer of the Year, Jake Lewing, defended his crown with a time of 2:02.74. That was a season-best time and an NCAA automatic qualifying time. Also placing in the A-final of the 200 breaststroke was Brad Ratliff in 2:10.19.
Some strong 'B' cut times were posted by DU in both the 100 free and the 200 fly. Mike Barczak touched in 45.51 in the 100 free for a second-place finish. Spencer Fronk trailed in third in 45.74 and Andrew Krawchyk took fourth in 45.76. The event was won by Kenyon's Ian Stewart-Bates in 45.25. In the morning preliminaries, Barczak posted a season-best time of 45.22.
First-year Jackson Humphrey, senior Kyle Chabot and Haney placed 3-4-5 in the 200 fly while Wabash's David Birrer locked up the Little Giants' second NCAC championship of the weekend. Humphrey's time of 1:52.76 and Chabot's time of 1:53.73 were both 'B' cuts.
The last event of the night, the 400 free relay, went to Kenyon who finished in 3:00.16. Denison's team of Joe Katich, Fronk, Krawchyk and Barczak placed second in 3:00.62. In the anchor leg, Barczak's 49.29 split gave him his 'A' cut in the 100 free. The Big Red men swept all four awards in the post meet ceremony as head coach Gregg Parini picked up his fifth men's Coach of the Year award and 13th overall to go along with Dixson, Weik and Glorius.
