Box Score Mike Resnik's three-pointer with a second and a half left in regulation sent Washington & Jefferson past Denison, 64-62, on Saturday afternoon in Washington, Pa.
Denison led wire-to-wire in the opening 20 minutes of play. A Larry Farmer layup and a pair of three-pointers by senior point guard Jim Leffew allowed the Big Red to take an early 8-0 advantage. The Presidents trimmed the deficit to 12-9, but a 7-0 run put DU ahead by double figures.
The Big Red led by as many as 13 points before taking a 30-22 lead into the intermission. Denison converted 50 percent (12-for-24) from the floor in the first half, and outscored Washington & Jefferson 16-8 in the paint.
A pair of threes by Zach Bellhy and two free throws from R.J. Pilato shrunk the deficit to 34-33. On the ensuing possession, senior Brett Tiberi drained a three to make it a four-point game. At 13:43, Pilato hit a triple to give W&J its first lead of the afternoon. Jon Akpapunam answered with a three of his own to put DU back on top 40-38.
Tied at 48-48, the Presidents rattled off seven-straight points to build a 55-48 lead with 7:39 to go. Trailing by nine with just over five minutes to play, a layup by senior Mike Garabedian sparked an 8-1 run that tied the game at 60-60.
During the run, Denison scored on four-straight offensive possessions to trim the margin to 59-58. After the Garabedian bucket, Farmer split a pair of free throws, Leffew buried a three, and Alex Longi added a layup. Following a free throw by Resnik, senior Marr Mansfield drilled a jumper in the paint to tie the game with 2:47 on the clock.
Inside a minute to play, Dimonde Hale came up with a block on the defensive end that gave DU a chance to regain the lead. After a missed attempt by Mansfield, Farmer converted the offensive putback with 22 seconds remaining.
Trailing 62-61, Resnik buried a three-pointer with one and a half seconds remaining to put the home team back on top. Farmer's attempt from behind the arc couldn't find the bottom of the net as the Presidents squeaked out with a two-point win.
Denison shot 44 percent (24-for-54) from the floor, while W&J hit 38 percent (23-for-60) from the field. Despite struggling from the floor, the Presidents hit 50 percent (7-for-14) from three-point range and converted 69 percent (11-for-16) at the charity stripe.
Leffew and Hale paced the attack with 12 points each. Leffew had three assists, while Hale logged six rebounds five blocks. Longi chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds, while Farmer finished with 11 boards.
DU falls to 4-7, while the Presidents improve to 5-7. Denison returns to action on Jan. 4 when they host Oberlin College at 7:30 p.m.
