Late run dooms Big Red at Albion

Box Score

Albion College closed out the contest on a 16-5 run, and despite Larry Farmer's 26 points and eight rebounds, the Britons came away with a 69-63 win over the Big Red from Kresge Gymnasium.

With 8:12 to play in the second half, a Casey Stockton 3-pointer gave Denison its largest lead of the day at nine points.  After the Stockton triple, Denison would go nearly five minutes until its next field goal.  By that time Albion had cut into the Big Red lead and trailed 60-55 with 3:42 to play.

That's when the Britons kicked things up a notch.  An Anthony Wash 3-pointer after an offensive rebound trimmed the lead to two, and a pair of free throws by Luke Walker with 2:10 remaining tied things at 60-60.

On Denison's ensuing possession, Dimonde Hale would miss a pair of free throws and Albion would turn that into a five-point swing when Wash gave his team its first lead since early in the second half, via another 3-pointer.

With just over a minute to play, the Denison offense came up dry on a critical possession. Forced to foul, Albion would sink six free throws down the stretch while holding Denison without a field goal for its fourth victory of the season.

Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Farmer was 9-for-14 and 3-of-5 from 3-point range for 26 points.  He also added eight rebounds and three assists.  Farmer was the lone DU player in double figures.

Albion got a 20-point, five rebound effort from Kolin Kazen and 11 points and six boards from Lawrence Ridgell.  Wash posted 10 points with six of those coming in the stretch run.

Denison shot 44 percent from the field and was 18-of-29 from the free throw line (.621).  Albion connected on 39 percent of its action shots while going 7-for-17 from beyond the arc.  DU held a 38-31 edge on the boards but the big stat was the turnover category.  Denison committed 15 and the Britons turned those miscues into 16 points.  On the other side, Albion committed a season-low six turnovers.  Entering the game Denison opponents were averaging 12.4 turnovers per game.

The loss drops DU's record to 3-6 while Albion improves to 4-3.  Denison will host Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday (Dec. 14) before a two-week layoff for the holidays.
