DU leads Miami Invite; Weik shatters mile record

Sophomore Al Weik picked up right where he left off and through two events the Big Red leads the six-team Miami Invitational with 226 points.  Miami sits in second place with 126 points and Southern Illinois is third with 120 points.

Weik led off the night by breaking his national record time in the 1650 freestyle set at last year's NCAA Division III Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.  Weik's time of 15:05.14 not only broke his personal best time by more than a second, it shattered the previous meet record and the Corwin Nixon Natatorium record that had stood since 1997 by more than 13 seconds.

Weik's time was an NCAA automatic qualifying time by more than 37 seconds.  Trailing in third place was first-year Robert Lawley who posted a strong provisional qualifying time of 15:57.29.  In sixth and seventh place, were senior Dan Thurston and junior Jay Haney.  Both turned in 'B' cut times of 16:06.12 and 16:11.50, respectively.  Rounding out the mile for DU was first-year Matt Montague in ninth place with 16:19.93 and Eric Fischer in 14th in 16:45.71.

In the 800 freestyle relay the team of Carlos Maciel, Spencer Fronk, Sean Chabot and Weik placed first in 6:39.94 which was also an NCAA 'A' cut by more than two seconds.

The Big Red will return to the pool in Oxford, Ohio on Friday morning with preliminaries beginning at 9 a.m. followed by finals at 6 p.m.
