Box Score All five starters scored in double figures as Denison picked up their second victory of the season at Capital University on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red's 90-76 win snapped an 11-game skid against the Crusaders. DU's last win over Capital was a 65-64 overtime decision in Granville during the 1991-92 season.
The two squads were locked in a dog fight in the early stages of the contest. Following a Michael Sommer three-pointer that gave Capital an 18-16 edge, Denison rattled off 14-straight points to regain a 12-point advantage. The DU run opened with a Brett Tiberi three at 11:48, and finished with an Alex Longi layup at 6:14. The charge also featured a layup by Mike Garabedian, and seven-straight tallies by Dimonde Hale.
The Crusaders trimmed the deficit to five points, but a 10-0 run to close out the period sent the Big Red into the locker room with a 43-28 lead. Senior point guard Jim Leffew buried a pair of threes during the run, while Jon Akpapunam and Longi each added two points.
Denison maintained their double-digit advantage for the majority of the second half, building up as much as an 18-point lead on multiple occasions. With just over four minutes on the clock, Capital's Kelly Winter shrunk the deficit to nine with a pair of free throws. However, an old-fashioned three-point play by Larry Farmer and a pair of foul shots by Hale quickly extended the DU lead back to 78-64.
The home team attempted one more run over the final few minutes, however, a fast break dunk by Farmer closed the door on a possible comeback.
The Big Red dominance started down low as they outscored Capital 40-22 in the paint. Denison shot 56 percent (30-for-54) from the field, including a blistering 62 percent (13-for-21) in the second half. DU also caught fire from three-point range, going 8-for-13 (62 percent). Denison held a 33-29 edge on the boards, and turned 18 Crusader turnovers into 21 points.
Farmer and Hale each scored a team-high 18 points. Hale also added nine rebounds, while Farmer grabbed four boards and dished out four assists. Leffew chipped in 16 on 6-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc. The senior point guard also dished out five assist and had two steals. Longi and Marr Mansfield also added 10 points apiece. In addition to his 10 tallies, Mansfield contributed six rebounds and two blocks.
Sommer led all scorers with 22 points, while Winter added 20 tallies and Spencer Niekamp chipped in 14. Sommer and Winter also pulled in six and five rebounds, respectively.
Denison improves to 2-3 with the win, while the loss drops Capital to 2-2. DU opens North Coast Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (Nov. 30) when the travel to Hiram College for a 7:30 p.m. start.
