Second-half score sinks Big Red

Box Score

Paige Piper's second-half goal lifted the College of Wooster to a 1-0 victory over Denison University on Saturday afternoon in Granville.

The Fighting Scots pushed the offensive pace early as they unloaded seven shots in the first 25+ minutes of action.  Four of those attempts were saved by goalie Andrea Karl and the Big Red backline.  In addition to two Karl saves, defenders Alicia Blake and Angie Coderre also kept two Wooster shots out of goal.  Denison turned the tables midway through the first period and closed out the final 20+ minutes with a 5-1 advantage in shots.

In the 56th minute, the Scots broke the scoreless tie when Piper lifted a shot over the sliding Karl.  The goal was her team-leading seventh of the season and gave Wooster a 1-0 edge.

The Big Red had two solid scoring chances in the 61st minute.  Sophomore Libbie Randolph rifled a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and stayed in play.  Senior Clare Meernik followed with a header that hit the left post.  Rookie Lydia Harlan uncorked two shots in the final five minutes that were corralled by Wooster goalkeeper Michele Ring.

DU held a 17-14 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.  The Big Red also committed 10 fouls compared to just seven infractions by the Scots.  Karl finished with four stops, while Ring made six saves in goal.

Harlan paced the Denison attack with six shots, while Grace Cronin and Tory Danis had three and two attempts, respectively.

Denison falls to 4-6-2 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC, while Wooster improves to 6-5-1 and 1-1-1 in the league.  The Big Red returns to the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 12) when they host Kenyon at 4 p.m. on Barclay-Thomsen Field.
