DU blanks Hiram on Senior Day

Box Score

Denison netted three first-half goals en route to a 3-0 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over Hiram on Saturday afternoon in Granville.

In their final regular season match of the 2011 season, the Big Red wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.  In the third minute, first-year Grace Cronin sent in a cross from the far side that was one-touched into the back of the net by classmate Maddy Regan.  The goal was Regan's fourth of the season and gave DU an early 1-0 lead.

Denison appeared to have its second goal of the afternoon at 18:04, but an offside call nullified a Cronin score.  Just 35 seconds later, Regan nearly logged her second goal of the day, but a leaping save by Terrier goalie Lisa Silvestro knocked the ball off the crossbar and out of play.  In the 26th minute, DU doubled its lead when Regan found senior Tory Danis who converted a shot from eight yards outs.  The score was Danis' second of the year.

The Big Red capped off the first-half scoring at 38:48 when sophomore Lauren Jay netted her first goal of the season.  Jay unloaded a shot from 10 yards out that found the lower left corner.  At the intermission, DU held a commanding 14-0 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

In the second frame, Denison uncorked another 14 shots towards backup keeper Kate Valaitis, and kept Hiram off the score sheet.  After 90 minutes of play, the shots were 28-0 in favor of the Big Red, while the corner attempts were 8-0 in favor of the home team.  Silvestro had six saves, while Valaitis made two stops.  Sophomore Andrea Karl and senior Kerrigan Dopp combined for Denison's 10th shutout of 2011.

With the win, DU improves to 8-7-3 overall and 4-3-1 in league play, while the Terriers fall to 3-13-2 and 0-7-1 in NCAC action.
