The No. 3 Denison men's swimmers and divers closed out their 2010-11 home schedule on Saturday afternoon with a 152-125 victory over No. 10 Carnegie Mellon from Gregory Pool. The Big Red posted nine wins en route to their sixth dual meet victory of the season.
This marked Denison's second-straight Saturday dual meet against a nationally ranked opponent. Last week they dispatched No. 15 Grove City 169-124. This afternoon, DU was led by junior Michael DeSantis (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves) who posted a strong NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 100 backstroke, touching in 50.63 seconds.
Senior Kyle Chabot (Washington, Mich./Stoney Creek) was one of seven seniors who competed for the Big Red against the Tartans. He was a winner in the 200 butterfly with a time of :55.38 and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay team.
Other seniors to reach the winners podium were Mike Barczak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice), Jake Lewing (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Cody Smith (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford). Barczak took the top-spot in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.88 seconds. Lewing won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.39 and Cody Smith won the one-meter dive with a score of 312.38. Lewing and Barczak were also joined by Chabot and Robert Barry (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's School) on the 200 medley relay which posted a winning time of 1:34.34.
Other winners for DU included Quinn Bartlett's (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) 21.59 second performance in the 50 freestyle. First-year Al Weik (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) continued his stranglehold on the distance freestyle events with a 9:26.41 in the 1000 free and Dan Thurston (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) was the winner in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.42.
This meet marked Denison's final test before they attempt to defend their crown at the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship in Canton, Ohio on Feb. 10-12, 2011.
