Tigers sweep season series with Big Red

Box Score

Wittenberg knocked down 13, 3-pointers, and had four players in double figures in an 82-54 victory over Denison on Wednesday night in Springfield, Ohio.

Despite scoring the first bucket of the game, the Big Red found themselves in an early six-point hole.  Denison clawed back and cut the deficit to 10-9 following a layup by sophomore Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) and an old-fashioned three-point-play by freshman Alex Longi (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier).

Ahead 12-11, Wittenberg engineered a 14-0 run to build a 15-point advantage.  A Hale basket at 7:33 ended a DU scoring drought that spanned almost six minutes of action, but Denison still trailed 26-13.

Wittenberg shot 59 percent from the field in the first period as they took a 49-20 lead into the intermission.  In addition to going 19-for-32 from the floor, the Tigers were also 9-for-15 (60 percent) from beyond the arc.  On the other side, the Big Red struggled shooting just 27 percent (8-for-30) in the opening period.

The home squad continued to roll as they opened the second half with an 18-5 run that spanned the first seven minutes.  The run allowed Wittenberg to take their largest lead of the game at 67-25, before notching a 28-point win.

The Tigers were 31-for-61 (51 percent) from the floor, while Denison shot a 35 percent clip (20-for-58).  The Big Red committed just six turnovers, but lost the battle on the glass, 50-23.

Junior Brett Tiberi (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) paced DU with 10 points, while classmate Rob Deaton (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) chipped in nine points off the bench.  Hale and sophomore Jon Akpapunam (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's) each grabbed a team-leading four rebounds.

Chris Sullivan led Wittenberg with 18 points, while Michael Cooper added 12 tallies.  Clayton Black and Seth Hill chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Alex Brandt pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Black grabbed eight boards.

Denison falls to 6-13 overall and 3-7 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Tigers improve to 13-5 on the year and 8-1 in the league.  The Big Red return to action on Saturday when they travel to Hiram for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
