Bishops foil Big Red comeback attempt

Box Score

Ohio Wesleyan got 23 points from Tim Brady and 19 points from Greg White, while utilizing a 12-1 run late in the second half to hand the Big Red a 71-62 defeat from Branch Rickey Arena.

The Battling Bishops put the Big Red in a big hole early on by starting the game on a 17-2 run, covering the first five minutes of the contest.  Over the remainder of the first half, Denison would continue to chip away at the OWU lead and with 25 seconds to play in the first half, a Marr Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Central) jumper cut the lead to four at 36-32.  A Brady 3-pointer would send Ohio Wesleyan into the locker room with a 39-32 lead but DU came out in the second half primed to make a charge.

Starting with a jumper from the corner by Mike Garabedian (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) with 13:23, that would set off a 9-3 run by the Big Red that would span the following 1:35.  During that burst Garabedian would be responsible for seven of those nine points.  After his transition jumper with 11:48 connected the Big Red found themselves in a tie game at 51-51 for the first time since the opening tip.

Over the next two minutes of play neither team took the reins as both squads combined to miss 13 straight shots.  That scoring drought was broken by Mansfield who scored in the lower block off a nice feed from Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) resulting in Denison's first lead of the game at 53-51.  Brady countered with a basket at the other end and over the next six minutes the Big Red were outscored by the home team, 12-1.

The opening five minutes and the closing five minutes of basketball were eerily similar for the Big Red.  During those time frames OWU held a 30-10 scoring advantage over DU.  During the middle 30 minutes of play Denison outscored Ohio Wesleyan 52-41.

Denison had four players reach double figures in scoring and were led by Garabedian's 14 points.  Mansfield followed with 13 points and nine rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench.  Hale, who sat much of the first half with foul trouble, finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.  Junior guard Jim Leffew (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) tallied 12 points and five rebounds.

Denison shot 38 percent from the field and struggled from the free throw line, hitting just 5-of-14 charity tosses.  The Bishops outrebounded DU 42-35 and were 10-for-16 from beyond the arc.  OWU's leading scorers, Brady and White were a combined 9-for-12 from 3-point range.

The loss drops Denison's record to 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while OWU improves to 7-8 and 3-3 in league play.  Denison will return to action on Saturday when they host the nation's top-ranked team, the College of Wooster, at 3 p.m.
