Box Score The 25th-ranked Denison Big Red and the Case Western Reserve University Spartans clashed for 110 minutes on Sunday afternoon in Granville, Ohio. When the dust cleared at Barclay-Thomsen Field there were 25 total shots, 19 fouls, eight offsides called, but no goals scored which, at the end of the day, resulted in a tie for both teams.
Denison held the 14-11 edge in shots, however, 11 of those were taken in the opening period. The Spartans outshot the Big Red 7-3 over the final 65 minutes of action, but failed to get a ball past DU rookie goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty), who notched her first-career shutout.
Of Denison's 11 first-half shot, four of them found their way to Case goalie Chelsea Laskey. Arguably the Big Red best scoring opportunity came in the 12th minute when junior Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) released a shot from the right side roughly 18 yards out that rung off the left post.
The Spartans had their chances to score in the second frame. In the 54th minute, Devyn Lee was able to get her head on a crossing pass. However, Lee's momentum put the ball straight into the ground and over the crossbar.
In addition to the advantage in shots, DU also took seven corners compared to just three by Case. Karl finished the game with five saves, while Laskey stopped all six Big Red shots she faced.
Senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) led the Denison attack by putting four of her game-high five shots on net. Classmate Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) also uncorked three shots, while Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) fired two shots on goal.
Denison now sits at 2-0-1 on the year, while the Spartans move to 1-1-1. The Big Red wraps up their four-game homestand on Wednesday (Sept. 8) when the Quakers of Earlham College visit Granville. Match time at Barclay-Thomsen Field is slated for 5 p.m.
