Box Score Goals by senior Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and first-year Lauren Jay (Westerville, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) combined with a strong outing by the Denison defense resulted in a 2-0 victory for the 25th-ranked Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Barclay-Thomsen Field in Granville.
In the 30th minute of action, Jay settled a cross from junior Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and fired a shot from 20 yards out past Tartan goalie Anya Rosen and into the upper left corner. The score was the first of Jay's career and gave DU the edge at the intermission.
In the second period, the Big Red wasted no time tacking on an insurance goal. Sophomore Alicia Blake (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) sent in a cross from roughly 30 yards out that Oshita was able to put a head on and flick into the near-side corner. The senior's first goal of the season came at the 50:50 mark.
Even with a two-score lead, the Denison attack didn't let up as they fired off 10 more shots over the remaining 40 minutes of the period. When the final whistle blew DU held a 19-6 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Senior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) led the team with seven shots, while Oshita finished with six. First-year Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) and junior Kerrigan Dopp (McLean, Va./McLean School of Md.) combined for the Big Red's first shutout of the year. Karl made four saves in 84 minutes between the pipes.
Denison improves to 2-0 on the season, while the Tartans fall to 0-2. The Big Red returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 5) when they host Case Western Reserve at 1 p.m.
