Big Red keep the Polar Bears on ice

Box Score

Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) broke a scoreless tie in the 60th minute with a bomb from 35-yards out and Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) would add some insurance in the 87th minute as the Denison Big Red held off Ohio Northern University, 2-0 from Barclay-Thomsen Field.

The Big Red were in control for much of the 90 minutes of play but the Polar Bears had their share of opportunities.  Big Red goalkeeper Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) posted three saves in the first half and for the game, ONU sent six of their eight shot attempts in the direction of Karl.

After taking seven corner kicks and attempting six shots in the opening half, the Big Red broke through at the 59:33 mark when Hoskin showed off her strong right leg with a shot from the center of the field and 35-yards away.  The ball was tipped by Ohio Northern goalkeeper Erin Waehner and the spin that was left on the ball made it appear as if it crossed the goal line.  After the referee and linesman conferred they ruled that the goal would stand, giving DU a 1-0 lead.

Ohio Northern would encounter their best scoring opportunity 20 minutes later.  The Polar Bears were awarded a free kick five yards outside the Denison 18-yard line and and they sent a shot directly into the Denison wall.  Off the ricochet, Chelsea Albert sent a well struck ball right at Karl who was there for the nifty save.

Just over six minutes later the Big Red would score for a second time when Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./The Baylor School) sent a cross from the right side to Oshita who headed the ball into the left corner of the goal.  The score was Oshita's third of the season.  It also marked the third assist for Clemmer on the year.

Denison outshot Ohio Northern 13-8 and out-cornered them 9-2.  Karl posted six saves while Waehner finished with five saves.  The shutout was Karl's fifth of the season.  The Big Red improve to 6-3-2 with the victory.  They will open North Coast Athletic Conference  play this Saturday when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a 1 p.m. kickoff with Kenyon College.
