Offense shines in Big Red's win at Capital

Box Score

After notching just three tallies last week, the Denison University women's soccer team erupted for five goals as they captured a 5-1 victory over the Crusaders of Capital University on Wednesday in Bexley, Ohio.

After an hour long weather delay, the two squads were finally able to take the field for the non-conference match.  Senior Kimmi Oshita (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) opened the scoring for the Big Red when she buried a header into the back of the net.  Oshita's second goal of the season came at 16:15 off a crossing pass from fellow senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor School).  Just 45 seconds later, Alicia Blake (Clinton Township, Mich./Chippewa Valley) sent a corner kick into the box that was headed home by junior Angie Coderre (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor).  The tally was Coderre's first of the season and gave the Big Red a 2-0 edge.

DU outshot the Crusaders 7-2 over the final 28 minutes of the opening half as Denison entered the intermission with a two-goal lead.

The Big Red continued to apply the pressure offensively in the second half.  In the 56th minute, senior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) scored on a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box.  Hoskin's third goal of the year came off a pass from junior Tory Danis (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood).

Clemmer notched her team-leading fourth tally of the season and added to the Denison advantage in the 74th minute.  Roughly three minutes later, first-year Jocelyn Festle (Park Ridge, Ill./Loyola Academy) found the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career when she headed in a Jenn Sloan (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) corner.  Brooke Lewis tallied a goal for Capital in the 83rd minute to break up the Big Red shutout.

Reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) made three saves in goal for Denison.  Capital keepers Linley Vermillion and Maggie Donnelon split time between the pipes.  Vermillion stopped three shots, while Donnelson notched one save.

DU outshot the Crusaders 16-6, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal.  The Big Red also attempted five corners compared to just two by Capital.  Clemmer finished the match with a season-high eight shots, including three on goal.

Denison improves to 5-2-2 overall, while the Crusaders fall to 3-3-2 on the season.  DU returns to the field on Saturday (Sept. 25) when they host two-time defending national champion and top-ranked Messiah College at 12 p.m.  That match will be broadcast by the Denison Sports Network powered by Stretch Internet.
