Box Score

A first-half goal by senior Maggie Hoskin (Chicago, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) helped the Denison University women's soccer team hand the 24th-ranked Pioneers of Transylvania University their first loss of 2010 on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky.

The Big Red held a 5-3 edge in shots through the first 30 minutes of action, with two of those DU shots finding their way to the Transylvania goal.  Denison broke through for the games only score in the 31st minute when Hoskin notched her second goal of the season.

The Pioneers outshot the Big Red 4-1 in the second period, but only one reaching Big Red goalie Andrea Karl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty).  Karl logged three saves en route to her fourth shutout of the season, and third in as many games.

Both teams logged eight shots and four corners, while Denison held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.  Senior Jen Clemmer (Hixson, Tenn./Baylor School) logged a game-high five shots, including three on net, while Transylvania keeper Kara Hansel notched three saves each.

The DU victory snapped the Pioneers' three-match shutout streak, and marked the first time Transy's been shutout since the two squads met in the opening round of last year's NCAA Tournament (11/14/09).

The Big Red improves to 4-2-2 overall, while the Pioneers fall to 6-1 on the season.  Denison returns to action on Wendesday (Sept. 22) when they travel to Bexley, Ohio to take on Capital University.  Match time is slated for 5 p.m.
