The Denison men's tennis team advanced to the championship match of the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament before falling to No. 9 ranked Kenyon, 5-0. This marked the fourth straight runner-up finish for the Big Red in the NCAC Tournament.
On Sunday, Denison got things going by defeating Allegheny College, 6-1 in the semifinals. In that match sophomore Matt McErlean (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) won his 21st match of the season, setting a new Denison single-season record. He topped Mike Provenzano, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
McErlean and doubles partner Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) handed Ben Hurtuk and Jacob Almaras an 8-3 loss. That marked their 21st doubles victory of the season which moves them into first place on DU's single-season list. At No. 2 doubles, Jared Connolly (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) and Tim Martin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) topped Provenzano and Max Hennessy, 8-2. Denison's three remaining singles points were picked up by Martin, Evan Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Hobrath.
Against the Lords, DU battled through doubles play, falling 8-4 in the first flight and 8-5 in the second and third flights. At No. 1 singles, in a match-up of two regionally ranked opponents, Kenyon's Michael Greenberg defeated Denison's Tom Cawood (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) 6-0, 6-2. That victory avenged a three-set loss to Cawood on April 14.
The loss drops the Big Red's record to 18-4 while Kenyon improves to 19-6. The Big Red will await word next weekend on a possible NCAA Division III Tournament berth.
