No. 3 Heidelberg pounds out 16 hits in victory over Big Red

No. 3 Heidelberg utilized a six-run fourth inning to top the Denison Big Red, 12-3 from Peaceful Valley in Tiffin, Ohio.  The Berg improves to 18-3 with the victory,  completing the home & away series sweep of the Big Red.

Denison struck first with a run in the first inning when Aidan Lucas's (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) RBI single scored Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) with the game's first run.  The Berg answered in the bottom of the first with an RBI triple by Jason Lash and a solo home run by current Ohio Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, Ricardo Lizcano.

DU found themselves tied 3-3 with Heidelberg heading into the bottom of the fourth inning after an RBI single by Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) in the third inning and a solo home run by senior catcher Alex Horn (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) in the fourth.  In the bottom of the frame, Heidelberg plated six runs off five hits to take control of the game.

The loss was charged to Denison starter Bob Girarratani (Winthrop, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) who pitched three innings, allowing nine earned runs while striking out two.  Chris Fries (Cooper City, Fla./American Heritage) closed out the game with two scoreless innings, facing the minimum six batters.  The victory went to Heidelberg starter Brian Koehl who improved to 3-0 while allowing 10 hits and three earned runs.  He struck out six and walked three.

Horn, Lucas, Forgatch and Andrew Mahle (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) all had two hits to lead the Big Red offense.  Lizcano finished with two home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs to lead Heidelberg.  Alex Monroe was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored.

Denison's record dips to 13-11 with the loss. They will return to action on Thursday when they host Oberlin College in a single, nine inning, non-conference tilt beginning at 5 p.m.
