Denison sophomore Tom Cawood (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) defeated the central region's top ranked player but it wasn't enough as the No. 9 ranked Kenyon College Lords handed the Big Red their third loss of the season, 8-1 on Wednesday night in Granville.
The Lords swept doubles play and were led by their No. 3 ranked duo of Michael Greenberg and Charles Brody who topped Denison's 10th ranked team of Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Matt McErlean (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), 8-6.
At No. 1 singles Cawood earned his biggest victory of his young career by holding off Greenberg in a third set tiebreaker. Cawood, who entered the match ranked 21st in the central region, won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second set 6-3 to force the deciding third set. That's where Cawood managed to hold off the 2008 NCAA Division III singles champion, 12-10. The win improves Cawood's singles record to 12-4.
At No. 2 singles McErlean had his 16-match winning streak snapped by Jeremy Polster, 6-4, 6-0. Hobrath fell in the third flight, 6-4, 6-4 and Evan Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Paul Burgin at No. 4.
At fifth and sixth singles, Denison's Jared Connolly (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) and Tim Martin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) lost in straight sets. DU is off until April 21 when they take on The College of Wooster at 4 p.m.
