After suffering a 5-3 loss on Friday to No. 19 DePauw in the quarterfinals of the 2010 Great Lakes Colleges Association Championship, the Big Red rebounded on Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Hope College in the back draw.
Denison, who moves to 14-2 with the victory, got straight-set singles wins from sophomore Tom Cawood (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) at No. 1, Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) at No. 3, Evan Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at No. 4 and from Tim Martin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) at No. 6. The win improved Cawood's singles mark to 10-4 while Hobrath moved to 9-4. Verbofsky is 10-2 while Martin moved to 4-2.
At No. 2 singles, sophomore Matt McErlean (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) had his undefeated dual-match record put to the test against Hope's Bobby Cawood. McErlean took the first set 6-3 but Cawood rallied for a 7-5 win in the second set. In the decisive third set McErlean prevailed 10-4 to improve to 16-0. Denison's other three-set win came from Jared Connolly (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park & River Forest) at No. 5. Connolly took the first set 6-1 and held off Kevin Hagan 10-8 in the third set for the win.
Denison's only loss on the day came at No. 3 doubles. Hobrath and McErlean prevailed 8-4 at No. 1 doubles and Connolly and Martin took care of business, winning 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.
The Big Red's next opponent will be Oberlin College on Tuesday (April 13) at 4:30 p.m. in Granville, Ohio.
