The combination of five fielding errors by the Denison baseball team and nine runs in three innings resulted in an 11-7 victory for North Carolina Wesleyan on the final day of the Piedmont College Tournament.
After both teams put up a pair of runs in the opening inning, Denison regained the lead on an RBI single by junior Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) that scored rookie Josh Butler (Oakville, Ontario, Canada/Iroquois Ride) from third. However, the Bishops responded in the third, fourth and fifth innings with nine total runs to take a commanding 11-3 lead through five frames.
The Big Red trimmed the lead to 11-5 on a two-RBI triple by Forgatch in the sixth and added two more runs in the eighth. With one out in the ninth and the go-ahead run at the plate, N.C. Wesleyan called on senior John Child to close out the final two-thirds of the frame. The senior reliever got pinch hitter Andrew Touhy (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) to ground out to third, which moved Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) and David Holmes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) to second and third, respectively. Child then got freshman Danny Kraus (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) to pop out to the second baseman to end the game.
Forgatch went a perfect 4-for-4 with two triples, five RBIs, two runs and a stolen base to spark the DU offense. Dale McOsker (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) suffered the loss allowing eight runs (six earned) off 11 hits in four innings of work.
Denison falls to 2-2 on the year, while the Bishops improve to 6-9. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they take on the Bethany College Bison at V.A. Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
