The Denison University softball team suffered a doubleheader setback at eighth-ranked Ohio Northern University on Tuesday afternoon in Ada, Ohio. The Big Red fell 7-3 in the opener, and dropped a 14-0 decision in five innings in the second game.
ONU broke game one open with a four-run second frame. The Polar Bears added another tally in the fourth inning to expand their lead to 5-0. Sophomore Lauren Lynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) got the Big Red on the board in the fifth with an RBI double to right center that scored senior Molly Sack (Toledo, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) from second base. DU trimmed the deficit to 5-3 in the sixth on an two-run home run by senior Alex Murray (Mayfield Hts., Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin). The reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week hit her third home run of the season over the wall in left field. However, Ohio Northern tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the win. Courtney Cash picked up her 10th win of the season for ONU, while Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) falls to 4-3 on the year.
In the nightcap, Ohio Northern jumped out to a six-run lead in the opening inning and never looked back. The Polar Bears added four tallies in both the second and fourth innings en route to the victory. First-year Nikki McCoy (Ney, Ohio/Fairview) suffered her first loss of the season.
On the day, Lynn went 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI, while Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars Senior) went 2-for-2 in the second game.
