Sewanee stops Big Red in overtime

Sewanee outscored Denison 3-0 in overtime resulting in a 10-7 victory for the Tigers over the Big Red on Friday afternoon from Deeds Field-Piper Stadium in Granville, Ohio.

In what was the epitome of an evenly matched contest, Sewanee managed to hold the Big Red scoreless over the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime.  In regulation the two teams traded the lead five times.  DU trailed 4-3 at halftime thanks to three straight goals by the Tigers, but in the second half, DU got two goals from Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) and one goal each from Lisa Feroli (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Moly Sbrega (Portland, Maine/Deering) to force the extra periods.

The Big Red did an excellent job of controlling possession throughout the contest.  They won 15 of 20 draw controls with six of those being secured by sophomore Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier[Ill.]).  She was also a major force on defense, forcing four turnovers while gathering four ground balls.  Despite dominating draws, Sewanee captured two critical draw controls in the second overtime period to prevent the Big Red from mounting a comeback.

For Sewanee, Mary Grace Bowring led the team with three goals including the eventual game-winner with 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime.  Meg Welton and Molly Arnold each posted two goals and one assist for the Tigers.

The Big Red were paced offensively by Thurner who ended with three goals and one assist.  Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) scored one goal and led the team with five ground balls.

In goal, Sewanee sophomore Amy Nusbaum posted 12 saves in her 66 minutes of action.  Denison first-year netminder Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) ended with eight saves.

The loss drops Denison's record to 3-2 while Sewanee improves to 7-1.  DU will return to action on Tuesday (March 30) when they host Mount St. Joseph at 6 p.m.
