The Denison Big Red opened North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday with a 9-0 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University from the Gordon Field House in Delaware, Ohio.
Junior Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and first-year Alex Marcell (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories at first and sixth singles, respectively, to help the Big Red, while sophomores Sarah Short (Cheswick, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Erin Chadwell (Chicago, Ill./Traverse City Central) posted 6-1, 6-0 wins at the second and third flights. Also picking up wins in singles action were senior Kara Zdanowski (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and sophomore Kate Westenberger (York, Pa./Dallastown).
In doubles play, Chadwell and Zdanowski logged an 8-2 win at first doubles, while Short and rookie Jane Lent (Glenview, Ill./Cranbrook-Kingswood) recorded an 8-4 decision at the second flight. The third doubles team of senior Maggie Colvin (Pepper Pike, Ohio/Orange) and sophomore Courtney Steiner (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) rounded out the sweep with an 8-2 nod.
Denison improves to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC West, while OWU falls to 3-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference play. The Big Red returns to the court on Saturday (March 27) when they travel to Earlham College. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
