Burling nabs 500th career win in victory over OWU

Denison head coach Peter Burling picked up the 500th victory over his career following the Big Red's 9-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday from the Mitchell Center in Granville, Ohio.  With the win, the men's team improves to 6-0 on the year and 1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference West Division.

Burling is in his 20th season at Denison.  He has notched 292 victories in his 20 years as the head men's tennis coach, while leading DU to seven NCAC titles and a ninth-place finish in the NCAA Tournament in 1998.  In 13 years as the women's skipper, Burling has recorded 208 victories, won eight-straight conference championships and led the Big Red to a third-place finish at nationals in 2008.

The No. 1 doubles team of Matt McErlean (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) and Nate Hobrath (Strongsville, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) knocked off OWU's Brandon Luttinger and John Rissell, 8-5, while the second doubles tandem of Jared Connolly (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) and Tim Martin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) defeated Will Thieman and Scott Hellberg, 8-4.  Denison completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory by Tom Cawood (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and Adam Seeley (West Hartford, Conn./William H. Hall).

In singles action, Cawood won in straight-sets over Luttinger (6-2, 6-1) at the first flight, while McErlean earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at second singles and Hobrath picked up a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles over Thieman. Evan Verbofsky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area), Connolly and Seeley closed out the final three singles flights with straight-set wins.

Denison returns to the court on Wednesday (March 24) when they host Mount Union College at 4 p.m.
