No. 2 Heidelberg outslugs DU in 2010 home opener

No. 2 Heidelberg University scored 12 of their 14 runs in the opening five innings of play en route to a 14-7 victory over the Denison Big Red in their 2010 home opener from Granville, Ohio.

Heidelberg catcher Steve Decker was 4-for-6 at the plate with a double and five RBIs.  Third baseman Willie Brechun was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.  Brechun's two-run homer to center in the fifth inning gave The Berg a 12-0 lead.

In the Denison half of the fifth inning they got on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI fielders choice by Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) and a wild pitch that scored Andrew Mahle (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery).  DU would tack on two runs in the seventh and in the eighth inning, DU would get an RBI single by Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and a pinch-hit double by Justin Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) that plated Mahle.  Vaske would later score Denison's seventh run on a wild pitch.

Heidelberg starter Everett Thomas improved to 2-0 with the victory.  He pitched five innings allowing four hits, two earned runs, six walks while striking out three.  The loss was charged to DU first-year Philip Seay (Brooklyn, N.Y./Berkeley Carroll School) who allowed six earned runs in three innings pitched.  Dale McOsker (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs off five hits while striking out three.

Mahle paced Denison at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.  First-year center fielder Danny Kraus (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Big Red drop to 8-6 on the year while Heidelberg improves to 13-1.  DU will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky. for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
