The Denison softball team suffered a twinbill setback to 21st-ranked Salisbury University on the opening day of the Sea Gull Invitational Tournament in Salisbury, Md. The Big Red dropped game one 6-0 and fell 3-1 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Sea Gulls broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single. The host school went on to add five insurance runs in the sixth to lock up the victory. Denison committed four fielding miscues that resulted in Salisbury's six unearned runs. Senior Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) suffered the loss allowing nine hits in six innings.
In the second game, the Gulls went up by a run after posting a single tally in the second frame. DU tied the contest at 1-1 on a two-out RBI single by rookie Jessica Robertson (Mt. Gilead, Ohio/Mt. Gilead). The first-year's base hit scored senior Samantha Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) from third. Salisbury scored the go-ahead run in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh to pick up the doubleheader sweep. Rumschlag threw all seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits in the loss.
Robertson and senior Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars Senior) each recorded a double in the first game, while sophomore Lauren Lynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) went 2-for-4 with a double in game two.
The Sea Gulls improve to 9-2 on the year, while Denison falls to 3-5 overall. DU returns to the field on Saturday (March 20) when they take on Capital (9 a.m.) and Kings (11 a.m.) at the Sea Gull Invitational Tournament.
