No. 17 Wheaton halts Denison's winning streak

Eric Jensen logged three hits and drove in three runs as the 17th-ranked Wheaton College Lyons knocked off Denison University 8-1 on Friday at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.  The loss snapped the Big Red's four-game winning streak and drops their record to 7-4 on the year.

Wheaton executed the small-ball technique to perfection to generate a run in both the second and third innings.  In both frames, the Lyons recorded a leadoff double, dropped a 54 sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly.  Denison cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third when junior Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) drove in freshman Andrew Touhy (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy) on a sacrifice fly to left field, but the Lyons posted tallies in the final four frames to lock up their third victory of the season.

Senior Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) went 3-for-4 on the day, while rookie Danny Kraus logged a pair of hits.  DU's only extra-base hit of the game was Touhy's leadoff triple in the third inning.  Sophomore Tyler Vaske (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) suffered the loss allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.

Jensen and Jeff Lieneck both went 3-for-4 to pace the Wheaton offense.  Jensen logged two doubles, three RBIs and two runs, while Lieneck hit a double, drove in a pair and scored twice.  Nolan Corr got the win for the Lyons, pitching seven innings of one-run ball with three strike outs.

The Big Red returns to Auburndale, Fla. to close out the RussMatt Invitational against Hope College at Lake Myrtle Park.  First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
