The Denison offense scored in seven of nine innings, compiled a season-high 23 hits and stole eight bases as the Big Red picked up an 18-12 victory over Fontbonne Univesrity on Tuesday afternoon in Auburndale, Fla.
Trailing 7-5 at the end of the third inning, Denison erupted for 10 runs over the next three frames to regain a 15-7 lead. After posting five runs in the fourth to take a three-run edge, the Big Red tacked on three and two runs in the fifth and sixth, respectively. The Griffins trimmed the deficit to four (16-12) following a four-run eighth, but Denison hung two more tallies in the ninth to secure the victory.
Junior southpaw Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) pitched another gem in relief for DU. Marino struck out two batters in three hitless innings of work en route to picking up his second victory of the season.
Freshman Danny Kraus (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) paced the Denison offense with five hits, five runs scored and three stolen bases, while senior Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) went 3-for-4 with a double and a season-high six RBIs. Kevin Teague (Fairfax Station, Va./St. Stephens and St. Agnes) logged three hits and drove in three runs, while both Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino) and Zach Huttie (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) went 2-for-4 at the plate. Forgatch scored three times, drove in a pair and swiped two bags, while Huttie logged a double and knocked in two runs.
Junior outfielder and reigning NCAC Hitter of the Week Peter Krieger (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) extended his current hitting streak to six games after going 2-for-4 on the day.
The Big Red (5-3) returns to the field on Wednesday (March 17) when they take on St. Norbert at Chain of Lakes Park. First pitch from Winter Haven, Fla. is slated for 11:30 a.m.
