DU picks up first win of 2010 at Pacific

Phoebe Myhrum (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) scored four goals and Alex Thurner (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day) added three scores as the Big Red women's lacrosse team rolled to a 19-10 win over Pacific University (Ore.) on Sunday night.

The Big Red took a 4-1 lead in the opening minutes of the first half thanks to goals from Carly Tschantz (Omaha, Neb./New Trier[Ill.]), Myhrum, Sara Langsam (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Jenny Strathern (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington).  Over the next six minutes, Pacific would score three goals to cut the DU lead to 5-4 with 14 minutes to play in the half.

With just under 10 minutes left in the period, Denison's Megan Lafferty (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) scored off an assist from Langsam.  That goal would spark a 6-0 run for DU that would stretch well into the second half, essentially putting the game out of reach for the Boxers.

Myhrum led DU with four goals off only four shot attempts.  She also led the team with five draw controls.  Thurner scored three goals off five shots while Strathern, Molly Sprega (Portland, Maine/Deering), Kelly Lengsfield (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and Lisa Feroli (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) all scored twice.

Denison netted their 19 goals off only 34 shots.  Both teams finished with 15 ground balls and DU goalie Hannah Minifie (Dalton, Mass./Miss Hall's School) posted 10 saves in 45 minutes of action.

Pacific was led by Kaitlyn Harper's three goals.  Goalie Brittany Harmon ended with 13 saves.  The Boxers fall to 2-1 on the season while DU improves to 1-1.

DU will return to the playing field on Tuesday when their second of three games on their west coast trip takes them to Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. where they will take on the host Wildcats at 9 p.m. EST.
