The Denison University baseball team jumped out to an early 10-run lead en route to knocking off Oglethorpe University 16-5 on Saturday afternoon from Anderson Field in Atlanta, Ga.
The Big Red only recorded three hits in the first frame, but a couple fielding miscues by the Petrels helped DU plate four runs in the inning.
In the second frame, senior Park Smith (Warren, N.J./The Pingry School) sent a one-out single up the middle to scoring Danny Pritz (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) from second base to put DU up 5-0. After Aidan Lucas (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, sophomore David Holmes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) drew a walk that brought home Matt Forgatch (San Marino, Calif./San Marino).
The base-on-balls forced Oglethorpe to make a pitching change that brought in senior pitcher John Hale. Hale's day didn't start we well as he planned as Peter Krieger (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) cleared the bases on a grand slam home run.
Already up 11-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Lucas blasted the Big Red's second grand slam of the game over the right field wall. The senior's homer drove in Smith, Forgatch and rookie Andrew Touhy (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola Academy).
Junior lefty Freddy Marino (Shaker Heights, Ohio/University School) picked up his first victory of the year. Marino gave up one run on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Kevin Bratcher (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits with two Ks.
Krieger finished the day 2-for-3 with a homer and six RBIs, while Lucas went 2-for-3 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs and Smith was 3-for-4 with a double, four runs scored and two RBIs.
Denison improves to 3-2 on the year, while Oglethorpe falls to 10-4. The Big Red returns to action on Sunday when they take on the University of Massachusetts-Boston at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. First pitch from Chain of Lakes Park is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
