Denison tops Methodist at Leadoff Classic

A seven-run fifth inning sent Denison University to a 14-2 victory over Methodist on Saturday evening, advancing the Big Red to the semifinals of the Bronze Championship Bracket at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Panama City Beach, Fla.

Denison broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second on an RBI fielder's choice manufactured by sophomore Sophia Iglesias (McLean, Va./McLean).  The Iglesias hit scored senior Samantha Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) from third base.

The Big Red tacked on three insurance runs in the third frame thanks to a three-run home run by junior shortstop Erica Evans (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) that plated senior Emily Croll (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor) and sophomore Lauren Lynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore).

DU added three more tallies in the fourth and knocked in seven more in the top of the fifth inning to solidify the mercy-rule win.

Evans finished the game with a home run, a pair of singles, three runs scored and a career-high six RBIs.  Lynn also went 3-for-4 with three runs, while Rumschlag went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Denison improves to 2-2 on the season, while the Monarchs fall to 2-12.  The Big Red returns to action Sunday morning when they take on Transylvania at 8:30 a.m. CST.
