The Denison softball team dropped a 6-0 decision to 11th-ranked Christopher Newport on Friday night at the Division III National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic held at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The Captains posted single runs in the second and third innings, and extended their lead with a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth frames. CNU's Elizabeth Holte scattered five hits and struck out eight batters in 5.1 innings, while Mary Kennedy scored three of Christopher Newport's six runs.
Seniors Samantha Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) and Brie Berkopec (Mars, Pa./Mars Senior) paced the Big Red offense with a double each, while sophomore Kait Fiore (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) logged two singles. Senior pitcher Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield) allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits, registered three strikeouts and issued three free passes.
Denison falls to 1-1 on the year, while the Captains improved to 10-2 on the season. DU closes out round robin play at the Leadoff Classic on Saturday when they take on the University of St. Thomas. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
