Big Red basketball teams gear up for NCAC Tournament

The Big Red men's and women's basketball teams have both qualified for the 2010 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament and will tip off action on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.  The women have earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will host Allegheny College while the men's team enters as the No. 7 seed and will travel to Wabash College.

The women have captured five NCAC Tournament championships and have won four of the last five tournaments played.  This is their 18th tournament berth and the sixth time they have faced the Gators in tourney play.  DU is 5-1 against Allegheny in the conference tournament with their only loss coming in the semifinals of the 2003-04 tournament.

The Big Red is led by defending NCAC Player of the Year, Shaina Kaiser (Ostrander, Ohio/Buckeye Valley) and her 16.3 ppg.  Kaiser is fourth in the conference in scoring average and is ninth in rebounding at 6.3 rpg.  Sophomore post Christina Myers (Pataskala, Ohio/Watkins Memorial) is averaging 11.4 ppg and first-year point guard Serafina Nuzzo (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) is averaging 10.1 ppg and is third in the NCAC in assists with 4.1 apg.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 23) at Livingston Gymnasium and tickets will be $7 for adults and $5 for children and students with a valid ID.  The first 150 Denison students will be admitted free of charge with a valid ID.

The men's team will travel to Crawfordsville, Ind. for a rematch with the Little Giants at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.  This will be the third meeting between Denison and Wabash this season.  The Big Red won the first contest, at home, on Dec 5 but suffered a 70-51 loss at Wabash on Jan. 16.  The Big Red are making their 22nd appearance in the conference tournament but this will be just their second meeting with Wabash in the NCAC's annual postseason clash.  The last time they played in the conference tournament, Wabash came away with an 89-53 in 2002.

The Big Red is led by senior Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) who is averaging 14.8 ppg.  Junior Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Twp.) is tied for the league lead in double-doubles with nine and he leads the NCAC in rebounding at 9.8 rpg.
