In one final tune-up before the 2010 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in March, the Big Red's men's and women's teams both earned victories at the Kenyon Invitational on Saturday in Gambier, Ohio.
The meet, which featured 14 women's teams and 15 men's squads was headlined by nine Denison victories. In the men's competition, the Big Red scored 443.5 points, easily outdistancing themselves from the field. Second-place went to SUNY-Geneseo with 262 points.
Senior and seven-time All-American, John Nemeth (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) posted a pair of season-best 'B' cut times in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. In the 100 breast, Nemeth placed third with a time of 57.89. He came back in the 200 with a victory and a winning time of 2:04.82. Also posting a season-best, provisional time was junior Bernard Chen (Singapore/Anglo-Chinese School) in the 100 butterfly. Chen touched in 50.89 which was good for third place in the event.
On the women's side, DU picked up four event wins and totaled 441 points to finish first. Second-place went to Malone College with 247 points.
There were eight season-best, NCAA 'B' cut times logged by the Big Red on Saturday. Sophomore Brenna Broadus (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarie) had two of those times and both resulted in event victories. In the 200 IM, Broadus touched in 2:06.00 for a very strong 'B' cut. She followed with a time of 56.84 in the 100 fly. Freshman Alyssa Swanson (Aurora, Colo./Regis Jesuit), who already punched her ticket to nationals last weekend in Canton, posted two season-best times in the 50 free (23.75) and the 100 fly (58.02).
Senior Laura Menard (Mukilteo, Wash./Kamiak) is trying to qualify for her second NCAA Championship and she helped her chances with a provisional time in the 200 free (1:54.44). First-year Maddie Armitage (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took first place in the 100 back and posted a 'B' time of 58.52. Denison's other two provisional, season-best swims came from Rochelle Akradi (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) in the 200 breast (2:23.92) and from Brittany Oxley (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) in the 50 free (24.31).
Denison will look to improve upon their pair of third place finishes in last year's NCAA Division III Championship, beginning on March 17 and continuing through March 20 in Minneapolis, Minn.
