Big Red win on the road at Oberlin

Mike Garabedian (LaGrange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) scored 16 points and Larry Farmer (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Twp.) set a new career-high with 17 rebounds as the Big Red swept the season series with Oberlin, 73-62.  The victory lifted Denison's record to 7-8 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

The Big Red managed only 23 points in the first half and were clinging to a 23-19 lead at the half.  In the second half the Big Red turned their attention to the paint and got to the free throw line an astounding 31 times over the final 20 minutes of play.  After going just 3 of 6 at the charity stripe in the opening stanza, the Big Red drilled 23 of 31 at the line in the second half to pull away from the Yeomen.

Garabedian led DU with 16 points while going 10 of 13 from the free throw line.  He also pulled down nine rebounds and had three steals in 30 minutes.  Farmer tallied his ninth double-double of the season which leads the NCAC by snaring a career-best 17 boards while scoring 10 points.  He also dished out four assists and had four blocks and four steals in 35 minutes.  Joining Farmer and Garabedian in double-figures was freshman Jon Akpapunam (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's) who scored 12 points in 15 minutes off a 4 for 5 shooting performance.

Senior Chris Luther (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) continued his rise up the school record books.  His nine point effort moved him into 14th place on the school's all-time scoring list (1,083). He needs only 15 points to move past Kevin Frye, into 13th place.

Oberlin was paced by Andrew Fox's 19 points and eight rebounds.  The Yeomen were edged on the boards 40-39 and committed 15 turnovers to 12 for the Big Red.  Thanks to Akpapunam and Garabedian's big night's the DU bench outscored Oberlin's 36-12.

Denison moves to 7-17 overall while Oberlin drops to 6-18 and 2-13 in the NCAC.  The  Big Red will travel to Hiram College on Saturday (Feb. 20) for their regular season finale at 3 p.m.
