Trailing 49-44 with 13 minutes on the clock, Denison picked up the tempo on both sides of the ball. After junior Mike Garabedian (La Grange, Ill./Nazareth Academy) found classmate Marr Mansfield (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville Central) for a layup, the 6-foot-4 Mansfield came up with a big steal on the other end that resulted in a bucket by sophomore Dimonde Hale (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) that cut the margin to 49-48.
On the ensuing Terrier possession, the Westerville native forced a second defensive takeaway that led to another Hale basket which game DU a one-point advantage. On Hiram's next trip down the floor, Mansfield blocked a Glenn Campbell shot that resulted in a Terrier turnover with 11:28 on the clock.
On the next Big Red possession, Leffew found a wide open Garabedian who converted on a layup to extend the Denison lead to 52-49. Mansfield capped off the 10-0 DU run with a pair of free throws to give the home team a five-point edge.
